Madison:Fleet Management System

Current Situation
Qualcomm’s trucking and logistic division provides fleet management solutions. This solution suite comprises of
OmniTRACS: a vehicle mounted UI for the truck driver
OmniVision: a web product at the dispatcher’s end

This was a project done for Scheider. Scheneider has a large fleet of trucks which are very unruly and go astray.

The current process flow involves a lot of manual entering of data and paperwork. This leads to human errors and the onus of timely and proper communication rests on the driver, dispatcher. In case of vehicle breakdown or bad weather or traffic conditions the load( cargo ) gets delayed. The dispatcher would like to contact the

Furthermore, Qualcomm’s existing solution is becoming outdated and faces fierce competition.

SOLUTION

Needed a completely renewed user-centered design that provides a unified “vision” for the customer experience across multiple products and features. (More purposeful.)  Madison is a High level design of a system that overcomes the problems/ shortcomings of the existing system by the use Multimodal and mediated communication.

THE PRODUCT CONCEPT
Served as a switchboard, the new system connects the drivers, the trucking company, and the customers together. The system contains the schedule of the vehicle, and the tasks that the driver needs to perform at the customer location.
The system also continuously tracks the location of the vehicle, monitoring whether the vehicle’s location is consistent to the schedule and trip plan of the vehicle. The system provides the capability for commercial drivers and dispatchers to receive real-time routing information and access databases containing vehicle and cargo locations as well as carrier, vehicle, cargo, and driver information.
The system allows the transport manager to see the progress of their vehicles in real time every minute the real time monitoring will show where the vehicle is physically.
The sensor information can show what activity is taking place. In the case of a skip lorry the icon on the screen changes form a circle to a triangle when the PTO is engaged to load or unload a skip. A tool to maximise productivity of the critical the fleet management team they can carry on with other task and be alarmed to deal with the late delivery.
The system warns the customer of late arrival based on the known location of the vehicle and the target delivery. At anytime the vehicle driver can report changes back to base. Whether the situation has changed on the work on-site, or workflow has delayed reaching the next job, or if the driver is simply relaying heavy traffic conditions on a route for the other vehicles in the fleet, this always-on communication facility and vehicle data allows you to plan, re-schedule or re-task your assets accordingly.

PROCESS
1. RESEARCH observed and interviewed dozens of Drivers at truck stops and truck washes…… Stakeholder and driver interviews at trucking companies Ride-alongs with drivers What is working well and what is not working well for trucking companies and drivers. The personas and scenarios created during data synthesis shed light on several business-critical issues. These insights led to the product concept keeping in mind qualcomm’s technology. Phase 2: Product Concept and presentation Phase 31: High-Level Requirements Phase 4: Detailed Design moving towards detailed design of the UI for the back office and customer. and device UI for the driver Spontaneous Timely Effortless Workflow UI • Messaging • Hours of Service (HOS) • Navigation • Instant Messaging Key Features: 1. Dynamic navigation information (situational incidents, weather, traffic, routing, locating info related to driver life and work) provides driver with an alternative route and also shows him the correct turn and correct street name. 2. System recognizes conflict (e.g. driver is late) and kicks off a mediated communication where everyone in the company (driver, business leader, planner, CRS, customer, etc.) are given visibility into the workflow. Completed steps, next steps and who is responsible for these steps are visible to everyone involved, through the use of mediated communication. 3. A workflow is enforced so that costly errors, in the form of additional back office work, increased SG and A costs, and financial responsibility, are all avoided by placing a workflow protocol that enforces the right action. 4. The user experience of Colorado resembles that of a modern driving navigation system in which: – the proper amount of instructions are presented by the system to a driver in exact sequence and timing. – the driver does not need to navigate the userinterface; the user interface navigates itself at different points in time. 5. Colorado delivers a similar user experience to drivers not only when they are driving, but also when they are outside the cab and on the customer’s premises.
